COLLABORATING ON
OUR FUTURE SKIES 2024: TRANSFORMING ATM AND ADVANCING AIR MOBILITY
INTRODUCTION
In the heart of Silicon Valley, where innovation thrives and is a way of life, aviation leaders and visionaries recently convened at NASA’s Ames Research Center for a groundbreaking event: “Collaborating on our Future Skies 2024: Transforming ATM and Advancing Air Mobility.” Held on 17th-18th January 2024, this gathering marked a key moment in the evolution of air traffic management (ATM) and advanced air mobility (AAM). The gathering organised by NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and CANSO presented a unique opportunity to influence the future of ATM and AAM. Aligned with NASA’s Sky for All initiative and the CATS Global Council Vision, the event addressed the escalating requirements of airspace users. It served as an ongoing dialogue on the evolution of airspace operations, the needs of emerging players, and the identification of key attributes for future systems. The event drew participants from diverse sectors
of the aviation industry, including EVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing) manufacturers, airports, airlines, research organisations, and regulatory bodies, creating a rich and influential attendee list. Leading EVTOL companies like Joby, Reliable Robotics, Overair, Supernal, Archer and Wisk stood alongside established aerospace giants such as Boeing and Airbus, offering insights into the future of aviation. Esteemed researchers from institutions like Berkeley University, INCAS, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) contributed cutting-edge research and expertise. Moreover, key stakeholders from organisations like the FAA, CANSO, Airports Council International (ACI), and the Commercial Spaceflight Federation provided invaluable insights into technology and regulatory challenges. Endorsement from organisations like SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking and the International Forum for Aviation Research (IFAR) further elevated the event’s international significance.
