Adverse weather contributes both directly and indirectly to incidents, accidents, and delays in air traffic and hence derogates safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability of aviation.
Modern air traffic management requires custom-oriented weather monitoring systems; the products must be tailored for the time horizons and decision criteria of air traffic control and management, airline operation centres, and flight crews.
These specific products need specific sets of weather measurement and prediction datasets, which in turn, require a combination of tools and methods to measure, nowcast, and forecast adverse weather. The ultimate goal is to integrate and share relevant meteorological information among all aviation stakeholders to raise their situational awareness and support collaborative decision-making.
The above-mentioned was our main motivation to develop the Advanced Aviation Weather Decision Support System (AAWDSS), which is the result of cooperation with partners at the highest European research level within the SESAR research project Solution PJ04-02: Enhanced Collaborative Airport Performance Management.
The system is used for the detection, nowcasting, and forecasting of dangerous meteorological phenomena affecting the airport operation. It integrates detec-
